In Loving Memory of Charlie |

Charlie Lawrence-Berkowitz
2011-2020
The first look we shared is forever burned in my mind. Me, on one side of the cage in an over-crowded animal shelter, he, with so many other dogs, begging to be selected to be "the one.”
Shock waves flowed through my body as the shelter employee brought this tall, handsome, proud, regal beagle to a large fenced area for our “meet and greet.” Charlie was free! He spent little time with me in our communal pen, but explored every inch and inhaled every sight, sound and of course, smell, in his unconfined state.
It took no time for me to know in my heart that he was “the one.” He sniffed me for a couple moments and decided that I would do. He clearly had lived a previous life of royalty and was stepping down...but it was better than the alternative.
Charlie brought us love, joy, and an appreciation of dignity that we have never known before in a dog. He was never easy, but always worth every moment we shared together. He was pure, sweet, and innocent to his core. To be graced with his presence each day was our honor.
Charlie was the greeter! Each doorbell was met with a warm and cordial greeting — in a manner saved for only the most special guest...yet Charlie gave everyone that polite and welcomed salutation.
Charlie absolutely did not deserve the body he was given. With all its lumps, bumps and internal issues, his body was the antithesis of his soul.
Charlie is at peace now, over the “Rainbow Bridge”, as they say. But he will forever be alive in the hearts and minds of those who knew him and loved him dearly.
