Journey with Turtle-dove

Picture
Turtle-Dove! Whata girl. This sweet dog got her nickname while in the shelter when she was stuck on her back- like a turtle- and couldn't roll back over! She quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite for her silly antics, gentle nature, and longing eyes. Turtledove sweetly watched the staff come and go, the dogs being adopted, and days passing by- until finally it was her last day before being euthanized. Staff and volunteers joined together pleading for help for this favorite dog of theirs. Thankfully, in the nick of time, we were able to step in and help give her a chance to know what life and love is really like. It's very evident that Turtle-Dove was extremely over-bred and neglected, yet, somehow she's as trusting and gentle as they come. Since being in her foster home, she has adjusted well to pack and family life, she learned commands, and is very social and eager for connections and attention. She is very loving! She is one unique mama and we are so happy we get to be part of her journey.

Turtle-Dove came to us with many medical issues. She was severely over-bred, underweight, she had arthritis in her hips from carrying so many litters, her eyelids rolled in, her horribly cropped ears were always infected, and her skin and fur were in bad shape. We immediately spayed her. No more being used as a money maker, Turtle! Next we had her eye problem addressed through surgery and fortified her diet. We added medications for her other issues. She improved in leaps and bounds and we could all tell the burden of not feeling well had finally been lifted off of her. Her fur sibling, Patrick, acts like a nanny and a nurse to her. One day, Patrick was obsessively licking near one of her nipples. Her foster mom checked the area and found a lump the size of a smoothed tennis ball. Turtle was immediately seen by the vet, which resulted in an entire row of nipples on that side that needed to be removed, along with a large mass. Her skin had to be stretched and stapled in order to close the immense wound. It was painful and complicated, but she was a trooper through it all. Turtle was always sweet and graceful with the vet and techs (she is a favorite at the vet's office), her fur siblings and her foster mom. When the pathology results came back from the surgery, we were completely devastated to find out that Turtle-Dove has terminal cancer and they believed she has 4-12 months left to live. We are helping her make the most of whatever time she has left here with us on earth, determined to make her last months the best ever!
